From time to time, Theta Nu Epsilon will post current news here in reverse order. (The ‘update’ date on the main page will reflect the latest date.) Keep current with society affairs here.

February 23rd, 2008.

The website for the society has been moved to its current location, thetanuepsilon.com. This is a convenient step up for our internet affairs, and will facilitate the smooth operation of society affairs

February 15th, 2008.

The Chapter List section of the website has been restored. It was lost in the website failure of the Summer of 2006. Much of the original material has been replaced, although there has been some loss and some additions as well. Other updates to the website have been made, and the history of the society section should now be easier to understand.

December 31st, 2007.

A lost chapter has been located. The Delta Lambda at University of Missouri at Kansas City contacted the Alpha Chapter to indicate that they are alive and well. Their chapter was last heard from in 1930. The chapter is still reckoned an independent entity at this time.

December 27st, 2007.

The pro-chapter at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst officially closed today. The six members thereof continue as members of the society. It is unfortunate that they were not able to initiate any new members or otherwise continue the long record of their chapter previously.

November 16th, 2007.

The Alpha Chapter at Wesleyan initiated 23 new members in an extended ceremonial that was truly impressive to one and all. With so many initiatees, the whole process was logistically very complicated. However, the group of active members who put on this initiation are to be congratulated for their very effective organization. There was even an extended arboreal foray. All in all, a good night. There was a latter part of the initiation that was deferred to Saturday night. That apparently went very well also.

November 2nd, 2007.

The Alpha Chapter observed the installation of the new President of Wesleyan with due ceremonies.

October 7th, 2007.

The Alpha Theta pro-chapter at the University of Missouri initiated nine new members. They added to their initiation celebrations as well. "We have also had a congratulatory banquet with lots of fabulous food with all of our new members and bi-weekly meetings have followed our initiation." Banqueting is a time-honored theta Nu Epsilon tradition.

September 14th, 2007.

The University of Virginia Chapter sent an extensive report to the Alpha chapter and the rest of the society, including the following, "I am excited about what the future holds. As far as actives for next fall, there will be 7 starting back to school in the fall and me which makes 8. ...They definitely need a President and Treasurer to make sure everything runs smoothly. We also would like to hold some events in the fall to "screen" potential initiates... so things look very promising. I would like to see an initiation of 10-15 in the fall so that the chapter can get up to normal size." The last contact from the Virginia Chapter was on September 25th.

May 28th, 2007

Established contact with alumni of a chapter until now thought dead since the 1940's. Instead, the chapter survived until 1974.

December 6th, 2006.

The Alpha Chapter at Wesleyan completes it’s initiation cycle by initiating five stragglers. The ceremony is at the same location as previously and the initiation is very effectively conducted.

December 1st, 2006.

Seventeen people were initiated into the ancient and venerable society of Theta Nu Epsilon at the Alpha Chapter at Wesleyan on this date, which was a substantial achievement, though not a record.

The weather was appropriately abysmal, with low clouds, strong, moaning winds, and occasional sprays of rain. The society had invested a large old house off campus, and made use of all three stories for different parts of the initiation, and the current members had spent some time appropriately embellishing the attic for the reception of new members.

The parts of the initiation were excellently performed, and the ceremonies had a fine effect on the blindfolded candidates. The groaning of the house in the wind added a nice element. After the candidates were duly sworn, there was much congratulation and good cheer.

There was a social function later, where much champagne and other items, and which, also included the bestowal of Society names. The Chapter Secretary later wrote : “I am very happy with our members--they are riotous, filthy, and wonderful. The house is appropriately trashed, and things were still raging when I took my leave. Among other things, we blew out the lights to the entire second floor of the house, and I have a rather large burn on my right thumb, which made it frustrating when I tried to cool it with cold drinks.”

November 26th, 2006.

This note from the Alpha Theta Pro-chapter Missouri : “All is well here in Columbia. We had to hold our initiation a month earlier than usual, having it in early October, due to the inability for our members to attend and participate later on in October or the beginning of November due to various campus events and occurrences. Our new members are great individuals, as we welcomed them with a banquet where they were able to get to know the older members in a more casual, relaxed setting.

We have since held several social dinners, and are just enjoying being in one anothers company. We are looking toward next semester soon, but are taking a break in preparation for finals and, of course, the week of Thanksgiving.

Just wanted to update you on what has been going on here. We are all happy and well!”

November 11th, 2006.

The University of New Mexico pro-chapter held a successful initiation of 11 new members. They report that “As always, we held initiation at our spot high up the Sandia Mountains. The monsoon season that had come through Albuquerque in the summer left our spot rather tattered, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. Before the new initiates came, we met at the base of the mountain and had a few drinks and gave the TNE cheer—only heightened by the complete silence of the field. Our initiation officer Claire took charge of the entire ordeal. I would like to applaud her on a perfect job! I would also like to note that our growth is beginning to rival many other campus organizations. I am very proud of our membership and hope that we continue initiating great people.” It sounds like a great event, and one they all can be proud of.

November 11th, 2006.

The Theta Nu Epsilon Society happily announces the formation of a new pro-chapter at the University of Massachusetts. Four members of the Alpha Chapter at Wesleyan drove to Amherst to initiate eight new members in a suitably macabre undisclosed location. The weather was unusually warm and dry which made the tasks of the evening the more enjoyable. The devilings of Wesleyan executed an excellent initiatiation in a very full style. Afterwards, the two groups, Wesleyan and UMass, moved to a residential part of the campus for some continuing celebration.

This pro-chapter will reinstate the Eta Eta Chapter of Theta Nu Epsilon. That chapter was originally founded in 1909, and joined the legitimate society the next year. From that point on, Eta Eta was one of the strongest chapters of the northeast, and a pillar of the society. We have aspirations that, given the natural situation of the school, the chapter will again come to be a strong player in the affairs of the society. This chapter already has a tradition going back 97 years of which they can be proud. And this past saturday was a fine addition to that tradition.

October 27th, 2006.

The Alpha Chapter at Wesleyan conducts a small initiation in the forest wilds of Connecticut, making five new members. The last they were seen, they were disappearing into the campus night carrying bottles of champagne.

October 27th, 2006.

Pi Phi Chapter at the University of Virginia initiates five in a rainy Charolettesville night. “The ceremony was done by candlelight in a dark and empty classroom. It was incredible. It was hammed up. It was fun. ... We initiated five members and they are so excited to be a part of TNE. We chose them because of their love of UVA and what it stands for, their character, and their potential for making this chapter amazing. We want to see it grow and be something really special at UVA.” Theta Nu Epsilon “IS light-hearted and fun, something to value and be proud of, and a way to partake in and maintain UVA tradition. We went out together after initiation. The 5 new members happen to be female...but this is because they (being better connected to the university at the moment) have a better idea of which men would be good members of TNE. The goal is for them to do another initiation at the end of this semester or early next semester so that the chapter is at a normal capacity—with members that are both male and female, and from different groups and organizations. That being said...I am proud to say that the UVA chapter has nine phenomenal members and will be growing very soon.”

October 8th, 2006.

Alpha Theta Pro-chapter at the University of Missouri initiates nine new members. The initiation was followed by a potluck supper. Total membership now up to 23.

August 15th, 2006.

Backup files from New Mexico allow for a partial restoration of the website.

August 10th, 2006.

The Alpha Chapter is informed that the entire website has been wiped clean. Unfortunately, because of an extensive amount of files that had been moved recently, there was no current backup. The website is down for several days.

Summer, 2006.

The fact that Summer has arrived has not completely stopped the progress of Theta Nu Epsilon, and three groups at different campuses begin serious discussions on starting a chapter. Some substantial progress is made.

April 23rd, 2006

The Alpha Theta Pro-chapter at Missouri initiates eleven new members, reinvigorating the chapter and setting it on a much firmer basis for the future.

March 23rd, 2006.

The Pro-chapter at the University of New Mexico, (the future Chi Alpha), reports a large initiation. The chapter president writes that “It went remarkably well! Much more elaborate than the last time. I also want to thank the entire Chi Alpha chapter, ... for doing an awesome job on setting up initiation. We all met and ate afterwards... Be sure to tell everyone that in New Mexico, Chi Alpha is thriving.”

Thriving is an understatement. Chi Alpha is bypassing all the other chapters.

February 22nd, 2006.

One of the chapters experiences some difficulties, in part caused by outside pressures, but also because of some structural anomalies in the set up of the chapter. This will prove to be the onset of a low-level crisis that will have repurcussions until the next academic year.

March 21st, 2006.

The Pro-chapter at the University of Virginia, (the once and future Pi Phi), stages an initiation on campus; giving good assurances of its future growth. quoting from society correspondence, “The interesting part was that although it is March, we had snow flurries. While chilly, it actually added a nice touch.”

December 10th, 2005.

Large initiation at the University of New Mexico Pro-chapter, (to be the Chi Alpha chapter). The initiation was very large and very well organized, cluminating in a full initiation in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains overlooking the city of Albuquerque.

Ten were initiated, and by all signs they have chosen an excellent leadership for the chapter.

November 6th, 2005.

The Alpha Theta Pro-chapter at Missouri initiates eleven members, setting the chapter on a quick growth course, gratifying ambitions of its founders.

October 21st, 2005.

Pro-chapter at the University of New Mexico is initiated. This initiation continues an earlier chapter at the University of New Mexico originally founded prior to 1923.

October 13th, 2005.

Pro-chapter at the University of Virginia is initiated. This successful initiation will restore the Pi Phi Chapter originally established in 1893, and which joined the National under the Alpha in 1896.

August 22nd, 2005.

Three new prospective groups are authorized to re-establish chapters.

March 25th, 2005.

In an effort to have fuller communication among the chapters, the society today inaugurates a web forum, on a php-nuke basis. The forum is designed by Anthony Olson of the Alpha Theta Pro-chapter at Missouri, and is a great asset to the society. The rest of the society is indebted to the efforts of the Missouri chapter.

February 12th, 2005.

The Alpha Chapter holds a late first initiation of the year, most of which is held at a lodge in the hills above the Connecticut River.

Leading candidates blindfolded through the snow creates a lasting impression.

January 9th, 2005.

The National Organization of the Alpha Chapter, responding to intense ongoing pressure to reveal its initiation, created in part from copies of spurious initiations being furiously traded on the internet, has made a stunning announcement, giving away the whole of the Theta Nu Epsilon initiation. The National Organization also stated that it is hoped that this release will stifle the market for bogus initiations currently raging on some websites.

The press release states that the basis of the initiation consists “of arranging the Sophomore candidates in a large semi-circle, shoving large cantaloupe wedges in their ears, and forcing them to fart the Marseillaise while tap-dancing.”

“The initiation is excruciatingly difficult, and many candidates collapse from the strain,” a Society spokesman said, “but it is a venerable tradition. I wish we didn't have to reveal our initiation to stop this ridiculous speculation. But so be it.”

December 4th, 2004.

The Alpha Theta Pro-chapter at Missouri initiates five members to create a firm core for the start of the chapter. The very basic setup of the initiation still satisfied the ancient traditions of the society, and was a credit to the members at Missouri who put the initiation on.

October 28th, 2004.

An initiation was held at the University of Missouri, as a part of the re-establishment of the Alpha Theta Chapter. This new pro-chapter has a dynamic leadership and a substantial number of individuals committed to its growth and development. The old Alpha Theta Chapter was a powerhouse in its region and across the Western states, and we look forward to Alpha Theta resuming her wonted status in the coming years.
